The Zedu weekly wrap - bringing together the best in free ultrasound news, views and opinions from across the internet.

Zedu Weekly Wrap – 8 September 2023

We had a great coaching corner last night…

Suean and Michael - Zedu Ultrasound

with a big turnout and some good discussions on early pregnancy loss. We’ll have the recording up on the website soon – but if you can’t wait for some excellent free ultrasound education check out the back catalogue – there’s something for everyone.

Things that sparked our interest this week include:

  • a cool looking DIY Doppler ultrasound traning phantom that combines Lego, agarose gel and glycerin (5 September)
  • an interesting piece by Nav Sidhu (@DrNavSidhu) on using gastric ultrasound to eliminate guesswork in periooperative airway management – page 115 of the Blue Book (8 September).

And don’t forget – if you have any news or ultrasound related research you’d like to highlight get in touch we’d love to hear from you.

Until this time next week…

Suean and Mike

Get the most out of your teaching moments – join our TRain the UltraSound Trainer (TRUST) course This isn’t a course on how to perform an ultrasound examination or use the technology – it’s designed to give you the teaching tools you’ll need to teach ultrasound on the run. In the words of a previous participant – it’s meta!

Association of left ventricular strain–volume loop characteristics with adverse events in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

A schematic overview of the strain–volume loop and the derived characteristics. Solid line: systolic strain–volume relation; dashed line: diastolic strain–volume relation. (a) end diastolic volume; (b) after ejecting 5% of stroke volume; (c) end systolic volume; (d) filling at 5% of stroke volume; (e) filling at two thirds of stroke volume; (f) filling at 95% of stroke volume. ES: early systolic; S: systolic; ED: early diastolic; LD: late diastolic; Uncoup: uncoupling.

Multimodality imaging for patient selection, procedural guidance, and follow-up of transcatheter interventions for structural heart disease: a consensus document of the EACVI Task Force on Interventional Cardiovascular Imaging: part 1: access routes, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, and transcatheter mitral valve interventions

(A) CMR in cross-sectional four-chamber view showing as the SS is actually an enfolding of left and right atrial walls. This fold, called Waterston groove, is externally filled by EAT assuming a ‘three-layered’ appearance. (B) 2D TOE in cross-sectional bi-caval view in attitudinal correct orientation, showing the three-layered appearance of SS. The fold is marked by a dotted red line. The curved red arrow points at the wrong TSP through SS (see text), while a curved light blue arrow points at the right TSP through the FO. (C) CMR in cross-sectional four-chamber view and (D) 2D TOE in bi-caval view (TOE), in correct attitudinal orientation. The small FO makes the site-specific TSP very challenging.
